Beans I

acrylic on canvas

from series Green Beans

150 × 100 cm

2020

The "Beans" series grew out of a very simple, everyday inspiration: the sight of a plate of beans. This painting, Beans I, was my first experiment with that idea.

While the other pieces in the series wander into brighter and fresher colors, for this first step, I chose a deep, rich blue background. To me, it symbolizes tranquility—perhaps the depth of contemplating ordinary beauty. Set against this calm base is a warm, orange circle: a plate, or perhaps a setting sun. Across it flows an intricate, rhythmic dance of beans in various shades of red and burgundy. Their layering and overlapping create an illusion of movement and depth, as if the beans were literally weaving together on the canvas.

This painting serves as an important reminder that beauty and inspiration are lurking in the simplest things we see every day. You just have to look. And in that, for me, lies the purest joy.
