Waiting

acrylic on canvas

from series Covid Diaries

120 × 120 cm

2020

The painting Waiting holds an absolutely privileged position in my work—it is the very first canvas where I used the geometric principle of tangram to express my emotions. It was created in December 2020 as my personal reflection on the oppressive "Covid year." I am a woman who acts rather than sits, and forced passivity was worsening my mental state. I needed a change and a new beginning.
That new beginning became the tangram itself. I used it to assemble silent night observers—cats. They are masters of quiet, mysterious, and subtle waiting. In the painting, they gaze up at the sky with a comet, a symbol of a miracle, the end of the old, and the birth of the new. It was not the same kind of waiting as last year. It was a turning point for me: materializing hope amidst frustration and simultaneously discovering an entirely new artistic language that has accompanied me ever since.
