Mutěnice

oil on canvas

The painting Mutěnice is my personal, highly playful record of a visit to this famous South Moravian wine village. While creating it, I asked myself a question: Is it even possible to combine the strict geometry of the ancient Chinese tangram with lush Moravian folklore? The answer is this canvas. The green mounds with chimneys that form the horizon are actually traditional wine cellars built into the ground. I decorated the white facades of the houses with real ornaments that I discovered in Mutěnice. However, they are not exact documentary copies of whole houses—I selected fragments from various cellars and assembled them on the canvas into a new, personal composition. The sharp edges of the white tangram figures thus meet the delicate, colorful tradition of the Moravian countryside.
