COMPOSING REALITY

Viola Theater, Prague, Czech Republic, 2024-2025

The exhibition of works by Lenka Husáriková titled "Composing Reality," held in the foyer of Viola Theater, presents an exceptional perspective on connecting historical elements of non-European cultures with contemporary abstract painting. The main inspirational sources for the artist are two traditional Asian forms—Japanese origami and Chinese tangram. These geometric puzzles, initially folk-craft tools, became a source of artistic transformation that permeates her entire body of work.

Although she has never visited Asia, the region typically associated with these motifs, she effortlessly and gracefully combines them with the picturesque Czech landscape from which she originates and where she resides. Meadows, forests, fields, and her beloved Krkonoše mountains are thus clearly reflected in the "Composing Reality" exhibition.

For Lenka Husáriková, this transformation is not only a question of artistic freedom; her works also reflect contemporary social themes. Paintings created during the lockdown, for example, address isolation and the loss of freedom. Additionally, there is an evident return to childhood and nature throughout her art.

Her expressive work can formally reference op art, minimalism, or geometric abstraction, yet the arrangement of figures and color palette subtly evoke the pre-war artistic movements in Czechoslovakia and unique Czech Cubo-Expressionism. These sophisticated artworks, with hidden symbols, extend into surrealism—animals, landscapes, and shapes mirror her inner world and dreams. Ultimately, it was precisely in a dream that the motif of origami and her desire to bring it onto paper originated.

The "Composing Reality" exhibition offers viewers not only a glimpse into the world of geometric abstraction inspired by ancient traditions but also a testimony of Lenka Husáriková's personal artistic journey, constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries of traditional painting. While the form may appear clear, fairy-tale-like, playful, and even childlike, it conceals and composes something deeper—reality itself.
